Altun Ha is located in the village of Rockstone Pond, Belize District, Belize, Central America approx. 35 miles from Howler Monkey Lodge. Altun Ha was excavated in 1964 by the Royal Ontario Museum who gave the maya site its name by loosely translating the Rockstone Pond village's name into the maya name- "ALTUN HA"
In its hay day Altun Ha boasted approx. 10,000.00 inhabitants spanding as far as Bermudian Landing Village where they managed to farm; crops such as corn, beans, squash among others. With over a million mayas living in the area of what is now; present day Belize the mayas; of Altun Ha could be considered one of the bread baskets of the area among the many treasures found in Altun Ha are over 3 hundred pieces of jades, a maya book CODEX and a 9 and 3/4 pound JADE HEAD let largest jade object found anywhere in the maya world depicting the Sun God - KINICH AHAU
Altun Ha is an easy half-day tour from Howler Monkey Resort. It can be combined with other tours such as Crooked Tree wildlife sanctuary, Belize zoo or Cave tubing.
