TOUR DESCRIPTION:

The mayas believed that caves were the entrance to the underworld and where the rain god CHAC lived. The ATM cave is unique in that the archeologist have left the site basically untouched, the same way it was discovered. Although, caves were used throughout the history of the mayas for rituals the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave (A.T.M. cave) demonstrates the usage cronologically and intensity as the years pasts and the need for rainfall got greater to the point of desperation. The beauty of this site (A.T.M. CAVE) is that it takes you literally through time feeling and seeing what the mayas must have been experiencing during the drought which is the widely accepted reason for the collapsed of the maya civilization. The teenager's skeleton of the mayan princess is the highlight of this tour.

TOUR ITINERARY:

• early breakfast - 7:15 a.m.
• depart HMR 8:00 a.m.
• rendezvous with second vehicle 9:00 a.m. in Teakettle village
• arrive A.T.M. parking lot - 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
• briefing in parking lot and issuing of helmets, lights, lunches
• hike from parking lot to cave entrance 45 mins. (land basically flat, three river crossings, water level between ankle and knee)
• at ATM cave entrance lunch and restroom stop (out houses)
• approx. time inside the cave -3 hours
• upon exit of ATM cave we do everything in reverse.

• tour requires a certain degree of fitness
